Every Single Day

Posted by Robin Easton

Yesterday evening I wandered into the desert to watch the muted sunset. All around me winter’s dry grass glowed with sunlit rays. While I sat under my favorite juniper tree I watched the sun slowly settle behind distant mountains. I felt so beautiful sitting there, being part of everything around me: birds, coyotes, rabbits and wind. Each evening when I sit alone in this field I’m engulfed by the same powerful emotions, the most predominate being Love. It pours into me like liquid gold. Every time I look out at the horizon, tears just roll down my face because I feel the people of the world, their suffering, and I’m moved to profound compassion. The love coming into me is more than I can contain. My heart compels me to send it waaaaay out into the world, evening after evening. Although I feel the world’s suffering as if it were my own I’m overcome by astounding peace.

When I feel humanity’s suffering, the people who are imprisoned for their beliefs, for the color of their skin, for their poverty…for loving, I gain insight into my own life, and give thanks. Something all great survivors learn is that no matter how challenging or desperate things are there is always someone worse off. Being aware of this can help us gain perspective and inspire us to give thanks for what we DO have. I am humble in the face of someone with greater suffering, and I am brought to gratitude. Giving thanks brings to us more of what we love, more of what we are thankful for.

Below is a video from my evening in the desert.
It is a simple spontaneous sharing of “thanks”.

Love,
Robin

Excerpted from
Walt Whitman’s Sun-Down Poem
(Leaves of Grass, c. 1856)

FLOOD-TIDE of the river, flow on! I watch
you, face to face,
Clouds of the west! sun half an hour high! I see
you also face to face.

A hundred years hence, or ever so many hundred
years hence, others will see them,
Will enjoy the sun-set, the pouring in of the flood-
tide, the falling back to the sea of the ebb-
tide.

It avails not, neither time or place—distance
avails not,
I am with you, you men and women of a genera-
tion, or ever so many generations hence,
I project myself, also I return—I am with you,
and know how it is.

Just as you feel when you look on the river and
sky, so I felt.
Just as you are refreshed by the gladness
of the river, and the bright flow, I was
refreshed…

My dear HS, This has to be one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever read. And I have read “Leaves of Grass” a long long time ago and but did not remember this poem. How could I forget such beautiful words? But then and have been through so much living since that long ago time. Tonight I sat and read this poem and “knew” how Whitman felt, knew what he meant by these words. He expresses so well the vast timeless feeling I experience when I sit alone and watch the sunset. —This hit me hard, because I also realized that in sending this poem YOU also know this feeling. You know what I felt in that field. That moved me to tears. Many blessings to you my profound friend.

Your video is beautiful and so are you. Have a blessed, beautiful Thanksgiving. Each day I make a gratitude list. The list is full of the beautiful things the universe has to offer. Tomorrow, before our Thanksgiving holiday feast, I will bond with my horses and enter yet another dimension of spiritual cognizance. I am so fortunate on many levels. Robin, I wish you peace like a river, joy like a fountain, and love like an ocean.

Kia ora Robin,
Happy Thanksgiving to you my wonderful friend. I always feel so melancholy on this day, being so far removed from my original Taurangawaewae, my family, my friends, the memories of the Wild Places which impacted my young soul. Then I came here and read your words, watched your Place. I felt, truly, as if I was there with you, sitting there not saying a word, yet understanding completely what you are saying. You have no idea how much you have brightened my day, brought it all back to a perspective of real Appreciation of what I do have, and what remains to be Done. A wonderful marriage of your video, your voice, and the music, Robin. And your tenderness brings tears to my eyes, and gives me peace.

I wish/hope/pray desperately for peace in the world, but I know it’s still a long way down the road. In the meantime, those of us who are blessed with the experience of peace, must extol and share it. Putting beauty into the world, or recording it where it exists, is only a slight antidote to violence and oppression, but it’s something we must do.

Thands for sharing this. Wish I could sit there with you and soak up the peace.

Hi Robin. Such a beautiful post and like many of your other readers, I too wish I were there sitting in the desert with you. Don’t worry, I’m all for “personal space” so I’ll just go sit waaaay over there under that juniper tree!)

Seriously, there’s nothing like sitting in the midst of immense natural beauty to remind us of the big picture and that it’s not all about us, us, us…that most in the rest of the world are suffering. Hugs to ya…:o)

You are so right about the gift of freedom and the freedom to live and love as we choose – I cannot envisage what it must be like to be imprisoned and restricted by laws, both state and religious…well I sort of can envisage and it frightens me.

We in the West maybe take for granted the gifts we have .. and your words and filming underline this for me….very beautiful and meaningful.

How beautiful. I have just finished washing all of my dishes from my Thanksgiving company. I came upstairs to my studio to shout the door and have my silent time. I thought I would come over to your place. I always find so much peace here.

I sat and watched your video. I do have so much to be thankful for. I cannot imagine having my freedom taken away. I cannot imagine a parent having to think about a loved one being locked up. Yes, I wish all the world was at peace and all were free.

Thank you so much for sharing.

Robin I am so moved! I thought the words in your post were amazing and then watched the video and my God are you ever an inspiration. Everything you said just resonated with me and my spirit because it is the truth I live by too.

I hear from people so often the phrase “I have no choice” and a pang of pain goes through my heart because WE ALWAYS HAVE A CHOICE. We have a choice when it comes to nearly everything and it’s too bad especially when the people of the “free countries” go around saying that. What are the imprisoned and the poverty stricken people then supposed to say.

Indeed everyone of us has so much power and potential to change ourselves and our world and i wish people did not hand over that power to outside sources but that is everyone’s personal journey in this world.

As always your words pour out with love and truth here and I so whole heartedly agree with them. May we all be thankful and grateful everyday for what we have!

Dear Wonderful friends,

I am very touched by the earnest comments here. I loved the poems…so beautiful. They touched my soul. I am very fortunate and blessed to have met so many wise and compassionate people on these pages. Your kindhearted comments and inspirations are a delight to read. I’ve learned a lot from each of you.

You are also very supportive, which has encouraged me to keep going…more times than you know. I like the long term-ness of our relationship. it has a familiar quality to it that I just adore. The long-term-ed-ness :) has helped me to get to know each of you better, which I’ve found very rewarding. I am honored to watch your lives unfold over time. I like the humanity of that.

There have been times when I thought I was the only one who felt a certain way or who’d had a certain experience and then one of you has shared something deep about yourself or your life and I realize I am not the only one. That is very exciting.

I appreciate the quality of thoughtfulness and kindness. I appreciate you taking time from your busy day to visit ME!?! That one still astounds me. So I want you to know that I am thankful to have connected with such kind, generous souls.

Thank you from my heart.
Love,
Robin

Mainly though I just want to leave a record of my appreciation of this lovely post which must have taken you a lot of time and thought to put together. A huge gift. Thank you.

Robin, the mountains and desert are full of spirit and such natural beauty. Thank you for sharing another facit of your personal journey. You remind readers that the wilderness invites us all to feel more interconnected. As I head into the Canadian Rockies this week, I am reminded that peace and serenity begin within. These feelings can be reinforced by everything around us. It is a choice to love ourselves and to love others. We do it consciously and unconsciously. If you believe that love is energy, then you may also believe that the love energy you send out into the world resonates off of everything and is available to everyone.

Wow Robin you are one amazing woman. I loved hearing your voice after reading your blog for so long now. It just is so you – calming, succinct, clear, warm, alive and musical. Congratulations on the music – this is the first time I have ever heard your work. What talent you have. After being in a situation in Thailand in the last week where we could not just leave when we wanted to bought home how much we take for granted. It was frightening. We really are so fortunate and until you are in a situation where your rights are restricted you do not realise how lucky we are in the West. However, it makes me want to fight harder for those who do not have what we have. People in Thailand smile all the time. Beautiful people.

I hope you do more videos Robin. It was truly wonderful and very professional. I am so glad I am back and got to hear this – it means a great deal to me at this very time. Take Care.
