“Making Memories” MAKING MEMORIES

Last night my husband and I drove to a small nearby lake. As the sun set we walked along the edge of the water soaking in the evening sounds and pastel colors reflected on its surface. After awhile my husband hauled out our video camera and started to film the abundant life around us: humming birds fed on sunflower nectar, two feet in front of us. Rainbow trout jumped from the water, and fed in a frenzy on flying insects. Swallows darted just above the lake’s surface, and competed with the fish for food. A bit later the bats swooped by and a comical lone duck gave off a descending “quack, quack, quack.” Everything was eating something. So much life.

Once it became dark we headed back to our car. As we approached the parking lot, a young father and his two small sons walked just ahead of us. The youngest boy jumped about and chattered excitedly, and the eldest waved his fishing pole in the air like Zorro.

“What did you catch?” I asked.

Nothing! the youngest shouted happily, as he ran up to me. He held up something attached to the end of his pole, squeezed it between his fingers, and said, “See? It’s all squishy. I have a squishy thing for bait.” He was adorable, all round and small, barely tall enough to reach my waist. “But last week we caught one that was this big, he continued as he held his index finger and thumb, spread apart. When I couldn’t see the exact size I said, “How big was he?” I held up my hands about four inches apart and said, “This big?” Then held them eight inches apart and said, “Or maybe this big?” He looked at my hands, his eyes popped out, a light bulb went on, and he quickly reassessed the opportunity to expand upon his tale. Like all good fishermen, he promptly held his hands two feet apart.

As my husband dodged the whiplash of “Zorros” sword, he said, “Wow, it’s these kinds of things that remind me of the best memories with my father.”

The young dad looked somewhat sad as he said, “I don’t have any of those memories with my father. He never had the time. So I’m making memories with my boys.”

Enriching our lives is a choice we make. The boys chattered on to no one in particular as the dad pulled out his cell phone and proudly showed us photos of the previous week’s trip to the lake. I looked at that young father and said, “Even though you don’t have memories of special times with your dad, what you’re doing with your boys, now, will stay with them for forever. It’s never too late to create memories.”

He smiled broadly, seemed to perk up, and more eagerly clicked through the photos on his phone, telling us about each one. After a few more words, we said goodbye and “Dad and the boys” piled into their car, a laughing, shoving tangle of arms, legs, fishing poles and excitement from a day spent together at the lake.

Sometimes we get so pulled in to “work, deadlines, work, deadlines, work” that we forget to create those moments with the people we love. It doesn’t have to be a holiday like Labor Day. We can make any day a memorable day.
